Artist Statement My artistic vision is rooted in transforming the absurdity of daily existence into a transparent mirror, reflecting the invisible social issues hidden beneath the fantasy of technology. Drawing on my interdisciplinary background in visual art, performance, and technology, my creative process establishes an intensive connection between the body and space. This practice is keenly focused on how corporeal gestures and the resulting shifts in eyesight can disrupt and shift public awareness.&#38;nbsp;

I investigate what a body’s physical "printing" on technology truly entails, and this critical inquiry culminates in the conceptual framework of “Body of Technology”. I actively challenge the common perception of technology as cold, inanimate, and intangible by deliberately foregrounding its sensory and material experience. I invite both participants and viewers to consider technology through its often-neglected, bodily qualities: vibration, materiality, temperature, sound, taste, and smell. By prompting this imagination of the "Body of Technology," which can be soft, emotional, and alive, I subvert existing narratives and call for a re-embodiment of the contemporary digital era.

The execution of this vision takes place through dedicated interdisciplinary practices and collaborative participatory theater, operating on the belief that 'Daily life is a theater, and the theater is life.’ Participation is employed as a compelling method to unfold static social structures and reimagine the existing world. Through these immersive actions, my practice seeks to reveal the complex and essential relationships among body, identity, technology, nature, and life.


Biography


LIU ENTUNG was born in 1995 in Taipei, Taiwan. As an interdisciplinary artist, ENTUNG’s works explore the intersection of multiple fields, including visual art, performance, and technology, exploring various methods such as performances, photography, videos, installations, paintings, and sound. She received a BFA in Multimedia Art from Taipei National University of the Arts in 2018 and an MPS in Interactive Telecommunications Program from New York University in 2022.


LIU was selected by the NYFA 2026 Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program and the 2026 Urban Environmental Health Lab Fellowship. She was one of the winners of the BBA 2022 Photography Prize, 2022 Future Art Award: The Digital Awakening, ND Awards 2022 International Photography, and 2022 Budapest International Foto Awards.

&#38;lt;Too Bright To Be Painful&#38;gt; started with a question: Could the body sensibility be represented on a bright and smooth screen? To explore the question, the artist chose twelve overly bright colors, which could only exist on digital monitors, and displayed them on an iPad. She then explored the parks in New York City with the iPad. According to the hex color code, the difference in numerical value between each color was equal. However, due to the characteristics of light, the color sequence created a unique rhythm in the visual. The colors on the screen were flickering, and it implied the heartbeat rate of different animals.

LIU maintained stable gestures in &#38;lt;Too Bright To Be Painful&#38;gt;, which looked relaxing and comfortable, but it took a lot of effort to keep still. The process became a question to viewers: Can you feel a photo or video even when lying on a sofa? How painless can it be to consume information from the Internet and your mobile phones? In this work, the natural scenes are not a background, yet the artist empowers the neglected environments and invisible creatures. They were quiet and small as the body feelings we lost after browsing through bulk information, and the artist hoped to bring them back to the horizon.

Daily life is a theater, and everything can be performative. According to the idea, &#38;lt;A Daily Theater&#38;gt; aims to blur the boundary between reality and performance. In &#38;lt;A Daily Theater&#38;gt;, the artist replaces performers, lines, and settings with participants, instructions, and a subway station in real life. The performance invites participants to explore Lafayette Avenue Station in Brooklyn, and they receive instructions via mobile phones during the process. There are three acts/stages in the performance, and its duration is around 60 minutes.

Stage 1 - Strangers: Participants arrive at the station and start to explore the space. They are strangers to commuters, other participants, and the site.
Stage 2 - Janitors: Participants receive instructions that lead them to leave the platform with mops, and they follow the instructions to clean the floor like a group of janitors. At the end of Stage 2, participants will have a partner from the opposite platform.
Stage 3 - Imitators: Participants turn back to the platform while imitating their partners' movements until they leave the station.

The architecture of Lafayette Avenue Station is symmetric, and there is a long hallway between Manhattan-bound and Brooklyn-bound platforms. The structure is like a mirror, and travelers who come from different directions are one another's reflections. Also, how people perceive the world is highly related to specific angles they are at, so the artist hopes to make participants aware of the angle shifting physically by adding some movements, which include laying down, facing walls, and imitating partners, into the instructions. As a hustle and bustle city, New York subway stations are usually transitions rather than destinations. However, &#38;lt;A Daily Theater&#38;gt; aims to be a pause note in daily life, and participants will be more sensitive to the static society and come up with new imaginations of the world after this brief stay.

NIME means New Interfaces for Musical Expression, and here include two performances: &#38;lt;Reborn&#38;gt; and &#38;lt;Daily Glitch&#38;gt;. They are both performances with interactive sound installations. The artist applied Kinect Camera to capture the skeleton data and connect them with Ableton to create movement-triggered sound effects based on pre-recorded sound samples.

Performance art, Photographs, and videos 
 In Brooklyn, New York

&#38;lt;I Am Where I Am&#38;gt; is a series of performative actions with staged photographs and videos made in 2021. The work questions the definition of a person’s existence in the new media era and shows how people heavily rely on technology, especially during a severe pandemic. The artist shot the whole series within her house and uploaded it on Instagram weekly. Each week had a topic related to an aspect of daily life, like food, bathroom, and sleeping..., and the process lasted for sixteen weeks.

The screen is a crucial metaphor in work. People use it to receive and send data every day, and it is hard to live without it. The screen becomes a distorted window to observe others and a filtered mirror to reflect on oneself. To imply the loss of identity on the social platform, LIU replaces her head with the pictures on screens, and it creates surreal illusions that question the truth behind the digital utopia. &#38;lt;I Am Where I Am&#38;gt; aims to reveal issues like consumerism to the body, the controls of the algorithm, and the blurry boundary between real life and the digital world.

“My existence can only be complete when held in femininity, as when I was embraced by mother and father as a child. In such a moment, a father is also a woman. My Mother wanted to own a stationery store with her friend, without the stress of marriage either having a family. Her dream was shattered due to how the society wanted a woman to be like. My mother got married, had four births, had cancer, became a grandmother, lost her parents and few years ago, she attended her husband’s funeral. During that time, mother always wanted me to stay at home. I guess she was haunted by the fear of living alone in an empty house. She asked me to find her some music disks of Jiang Hui so she can play it while getting asleep, to endure the loneliness with some voices singing aside.In order to become a mother, she had to cut off her nose and ears, sew up her mouth and eyes. Tragedy happens in home, lilting slightly.”

"Climate change is destroying ecosystems, and species are going extinct faster than scientists believe. We are experiencing the "sixth mass extinction"! Although humans are not on the list of endangered species, climate change and global warming are threatening human health and the environment."
